This past weekend, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant world of musical theatre at the University of Michigan, attending Musket‘s production of “Catch Me If You Can” at the Power Center. It was a remarkable experience, one that was both my first musical at this iconic venue and my second overall at UM. The sheer size of the audience was a sight to behold, instilling a deep sense of pride and honor in me. Witnessing such a large turnout for just one of the three performances underscored the community’s appreciation for the performing arts.
“Catch Me If You Can” is a dynamic adaptation of the cat-and-mouse chase film, a story that I was initially introduced to by a friend who hailed it as one of their favorite movies. The musical rendition did not disappoint; it retained the essence of the film while infusing it with a unique blend of humor and theatrical flair. The narrative’s key moments were brilliantly captured, bringing back the sense of surprise and delight I felt when I first watched the film.
The performance of Fly, Fly Away by the leading lady was particularly memorable for me. Her rendition conveyed a depth of emotion that resonated with the audience, myself included. The closing numbers Goodbye and Stuck Together wrapped up the story in a cute and heartwarming manner, reflecting the evolving relationship between Frank and Carl. Their journey from adversaries to a poignant embrace showcased the characters’ growth and the story’s underlying themes of redemption and connection.
Although the musical did not explore Frank’s eventual cooperation with the FBI, the chosen conclusion was appropriate, leaving the audience with a sense of closure and satisfaction. It was a reminder of the narrative’s core, focusing on personal transformation and the impacts of our choices.
Founded in 1908, Musket has grown to become an integral part of the University of Michigan experience, enriching the campus culture with its theatrical productions. Whether as an actor on stage, a crew member behind the scenes, or an audience member in the seats of the Power Center, Musket offers myriad opportunities for students to engage with the performing arts.
This production of “Catch Me If You Can” was a testament to the talent and passion that thrives within the UM community. It highlighted the power of live theatre to entertain, evoke emotion, and bring people together, making it an unforgettable part of my university experience.
